Sometimes things are just meant to be…

A week before Christmas we got together with some friends of ours. Vicki and I were talking about getting into shape and she mentioned that a friend of hers runs the Cooper River Bridge run in Charleston and wanted her to do it with her. Since I knew running races was one of my goals for 2009 I said that I would love to do it with her. It is a huge run and it would be good to at least have someone to go down there with. We haven’t talked about it since, but it has been in the back of my mind.
I made me goal for the first three months to run in a 5K each month. This week I have been trying to find a race in each month to run. I really forgot about the Cooper River Bridge run becuase it didn’t show up in the months I was looking at January thru March. Then I happened across a website where it was advertised and I looked at it. The race is April 4th. Sounds like a good one for my April race. However, looking at it closer I realized that it was a 10K race, not a 5K race like I thought. That is 6.2 miles.
I mentioned to John that the race was a 10K not a 5K and I wasn’t thinking about running that distance right now. He asked why not? It is only 3 more miles. True – everyting seems easy to him.
Then I was reading a blog from Jillian yesterday and she said not to limit yourselves. Dream big. Well, 10K was big for me. That is now 2 confirmations that I should probably do it. Jillian and John would get along well.
So, this morning I was looking at my plan and decided that in addition to racing my three 5Ks that I would start on the 10K training program. Certainly I can run 6.2 miles before April 4th. I found a good plan and printed it out.
Another thing I had to do today was sign up to be in a running club. That is one of the “life” goals that I put on my list for Jillian’s challenge. I was going to become a member of a running club – I had to do it before January 10th to meet my goal. I got on-line and signed up to be a member of the Spartanburg Running Club. For $18 I get a year membership and can participate in their weekly group runs. This will help me a lot because I loose motivation on my own!
After submitting I went about my business. A little while later I checked my e-mail and see that I got one from the Running Club announcing that on Monday January 12th they are starting the Cooper River Bridge run training group!!! What! I could not even believe my eyes. How can all these things just come together? I think I was meant to run it!
So, I am excited and a little nervous for Monday. We are meeting at a track in Spartanburg for the first meeting. We have to fill out a little questionnaire about our goals for the race. Hopefully that means that they will have runners with similar abilities in groups. I guess I will see!
